Now as it came to pass, after the death
of Moses. The Lord needed someone that he could trust to lead his
people. They still had to cross the River Jordan, and enter the promise
land. He called upon
Joshua saying
"Be Strong and Courageous, for you shall
give these people possession of the land
which I swore to their fathers to give them."
So Joshua sent the guards out among the people to spread the word
. Prepare ye all for in three days we shall cross the River
Jordan and you shall claim the land that the LORD thy God has
promised.
He
also sent two men as spies, telling them,
"Go and look over the land, especially Jericho."
The two went and lodged in the house of Rahab.
Rahab was a woman who lived in Jericho. She believed in the God of Israel.
She protected God's spies. It is said that Rahab put a red cord in her
window to save her own life and the lives of her family. When the people
of Israel attacked Jericho, they found Rahab's house by looking for the
red cord. They took her family to safety. Joshua
had to concentrate and remember what the LORD was telling him to
do.
Lets see how well you can remember before we finish the
story. Concentration
The classic memory game. Below are cards which begin face down. Click on one to turn it over. Try to find the second card that matches the first. If the second does not match,
both cards return to a face down position. If they do match, the cards are removed to reveal part of the background image.
Three
days have passed and Joshua tells the men to put away their tents and
prepare to cross the River Jordan. The priests shall go first
carrying the ark of the covenant. As they stepped into the river, the water
stopped flowing and it became a dry path to cross by. One man from
each of the twelve tribes was chosen and told to pick up one stone from the center
of the path and carry it to the other side. Here they built a
monument as a reminder of how God parted the waters and let the
Israelites cross the river. Jericho
was not a huge city, but it sat high up on a hill. Its walls were
high and thick. So thick that people built their houses in
them! The Israelite soldiers probably looked at Jericho and wondered
how they would ever be able to scramble up that hill and then go over such
huge walls. But God had an answer for them. They
were to have seven priests, carrying trumpets made of rams horns going
before the ark of the LORD, and the armed men went before them. The rear
guard came after the ark of the LORD. They were to march around the
city once, while blowing the trumpets continually.
This they did for six days. On the seventh day they were
instructed to march around seven times. On the seventh time around
the priest would blow the trumpets loud and Joshua told the people to
shout loudly for The LORD has given you the city. Upon
the shout of the fighting men.
The walls of Jericho fell to the ground.
