Dad's Backyard Barbecue Aprons

Dad's Backyard Barbecue Aprons

A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again. A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt. A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail... Dad, you're everything a dad should be and some.

Gift For Dad:

Fabric paint and string stamps made from small square boxes are used to decorate an apron dad will be wearing all summer as he mans the backyard barbeque. We use Small Square Boxes ( should be about 1½  - 2 inches square ) to construct the stamps because the shape of the boxes makes it easy for little hands to grasp and stamp.

WHAT YOU NEED

1 white or off white apron (any style will do)

Pencil

Fabric paint

Paintbrush

2 empty small square boxes

1/4 inch thick twine (approximately 1 foot per stamp)

Craft glue gun

Paper plates

HOW TO DO IT

With a pencil spell out "Dad" across the chest of the apron (or any place on the apron you choose) in large block letters.

To make the string stamps, glue 12 inch pieces of twine in different patterns to the bottoms of 2 empty small square boxes. Let dry.

Pour a generous amount of paint onto paper plates. One color per plate.

Using the paintbrush, paint in the block letters that spell out "Dad".

Dip the box into the paint and be sure that the twine is completely covered. Press the stamp onto the apron.

Repeat several times, with a multiple of colors to create your design. Allow it to dry for several hours.

Let Dad try it on and get cookin'!

TIPS

To keep your colors true, it is best to dip each stamp into a single color of paint.

Dads and Kids Cookin Together

For many parents, "kids in the kitchen" conjures up images of children wielding sharp knives and a sticky mess from floor to ceiling, but it doesn't have to be that way. Putting your kids to work helping with family meals can be safe, clean, and fun for everyone.

We've listed some fun recipes that you and your children can make together. The two most important things to remember are, to be safe and for all of you to have fun preparing and eating the food you make.

Fruit and Cream Cheese Sandwich

Punch Buggy Pancakes

FOLLOW UP FUN

Make personalized aprons for the whole family. Then, plan a family cook-off where everyone gets involved. For example: Choose the menu and let each family member contribute in a some way. It can be an informal barbeque headed by Dad or a more formal meal in the dining room.

Install apron hooks for everyone in the kitchen so that the aprons will always be handy.

All activities should be parent supervised. Parents, please make sure that the tools and items needed for a project are appropriate for your child.
